Cough Cold & Flu

What is Cold?

The common cold is a viral infection of your nose and throat (upper respiratory tract). It’s usually harmless, although it might not feel that way. Many types of viruses can cause a common cold.
Healthy adults can expect to have two or three colds each year. Infants and young children may have even more frequent colds.
Most people recover from a common cold in a week or 10 days. Symptoms might last longer in people who smoke. Generally, you don’t need medical attention for a common cold. However, if symptoms don’t improve or if they get worse, see your doctor.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of a common cold usually appear one to three days after exposure to a cold-causing virus. Signs and symptoms, which can vary from person to person, might include:
•    Runny or stuffy nose
•    Sore throat
•    Cough
•    Congestion
•    Slight body aches or a mild headache
•    Sneezing
•    Low-grade fever
•    Generally feeling unwell

Coughs can be either acute or chronic. Acute coughs begin suddenly and usually last for less than three weeks. This type of cough is the one you most often get with a cold, flu, or acute bronchitis. Chronic coughs last longer than eight weeks (or longer than four weeks in children).  A chronic cough can wake you up at night when you’re sleeping and lead to fatigue. It can also occur with other signs and symptoms, including:

1. A runny or stuffy nose
2. A feeling of liquid running down the back of your throat (postnasal drip)
3. Frequent throat clearing and 4. Sore throat
5. Hoarseness
6. Wheezing and shortness of breath
7. Heartburn or a sour taste in your mouth

Influenza (flu) can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. People who have flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

1. Fever or feeling feverish/chills cough
2. Sore throat
3. Runny or stuffy nose
4. Muscle or body aches
5. Headaches
6. Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

What is Cough?

A cough is a natural reflex that is your body’s way of removing irritants from your upper (throat) and lower (lungs) airways. A cough helps your body heal and protect itself.
There are many types of cough. Some of the names for coughs describe how long they last, while other types describe how they feel or sound, and other types are actual conditions.

Types of coughs may be related to how they last:-

•    Acute cough begins suddenly and lasts for two to three weeks.
•    Subacute cough is one that stays around after you’ve had an infection and lasts three to eight weeks.
•    Chronic cough lasts longer than eight weeks. Long-lasting coughs may also be called persistent coughs.
•    Refractory cough is a chronic cough that hasn’t responded to treatment.

•    A runny or stuffy nose
•    A feeling of liquid running down the back of your throat (postnasal drip)
•    Frequent throat clearing and sore throat
•    Hoarseness
•    Wheezing and shortness of breath
•    Heartburn or a sour taste in your mouth
•    Rarely, coughing up blood

What is Flu?

The flu is an illness you get from the influenza virus. It causes symptoms like head and body aches, sore throat, fever and respiratory symptoms, which can be severe. Flu is most common in winter months, when many people can get sick at once (an epidemic).
The flu and the common cold can have similar symptoms, like runny nose and cough. But cold symptoms are usually mild and flu symptoms can be severe and lead to serious complications. Different viruses cause colds and the flu.

What are the symptoms of the flu?
Symptoms of the flu usually come on quickly, and can include:
•    Fever.
•    Chills.
•    Body aches.
•    Cough.
•    Headache.
•    Sore throat.
•    Runny or stuffy nose (congestion).
•    Tiredness or feeling run down.
•    Diarrhea or vomiting (usually only in kids).
You may not have all of these symptoms.

What causes the Flu?

The influenza virus causes flu. Influenza A, B and C are the most common types that infect people. Influenza A and B are seasonal (most people get them in the winter) and have more severe symptoms. Influenza C doesn’t cause severe symptoms and it’s not seasonal — the number of cases stays about the same throughout the year.
H1N1 (“swine flu”) and bird flu are both subtypes of influenza A.
